Chris Gardner’s Stuck Moment as an Ad Libber

October 18, 2011

His stuck moment: Trying to make ends meet in low-paying jobs after scrapping his dream of becoming a doctor, Gardner struggled to maintain his marriage and care for his son.

He comes up with a game plan: Impressed by a man he saw driving a Ferrari, Gardner made a plan to pursue the same work as the driver, which turned out to be stockbroking. He met with managers at all the major brokerages and was ultimately accepted into the E.F. Hutton training program.

Unstuck result: Fighting homelessness along the way, Gardner trained for and landed a full-time job, founded his own stockbrokerage, and wrote the bestseller “The Pursuit of Happyness.”
