Helen Greiner’s Stuck Moment as an Idle Achiever

October 18, 2011

Her stuck moment: As a designer of robots for military use, iRobot missed the mark with its mine-clearing robot, Ariel, which used advanced technologies but did not meet the needs of the customer. Greiner’s company became known for innovation for innovation’s sake.

She commits to her belief: When Greiner was invited to an Army Rangers demonstration, she used the opportunity to get user feedback by bringing a different robot prototype and asking soldiers for input.

Unstuck result: The prototype she showed the soldiers later became PackBot, a bomb-disposal robot that has saved the lives of dozens of soldiers.
