Charles Bukowski’s Stuck Moment as an Avoider

His stuck moment:

After several published works but still no “big break,” Bukowski quit writing for ten years. He later referred to this period—during which he traveled, briefly worked in a pickle factory, and was a fill-in letter-carrier—as his “ten-year drunk.”

He goes for it: A near-death experience with a bleeding ulcer stirred his latent writing desires. After leaving the hospital, he began to write poetry.

Unstuck result: Bukowski went on to publish dozens of poetry collections as well as six novels.

Drew Barrymore’s Stuck Moment as an Avoider

Barrymore’s early rise to film fame led to a tumultuous childhood and adolescence that seemed more about partying than acting. 

She goes for it: She decided to focus her talents on projects that interested her, founding the production company Flower Films. 

Unstuck result: Barrymore has successfully produced and starred in numerous Flower Film projects, including “Never Been Kissed,” Charlie’s Angels,” and “50 First Dates.”

Roger Bannister’s Stuck Moment as an Avoider

His stuck moment:

After failing to place in the 1952 Olympics, Bannister considered leaving the sport of running altogether.

He goes for it: Instead of quitting, he challenged himself to reach the impossible: breaking a four-minute mile. 

Unstuck result: After two years of training, Bannister ran the mile in a record 3:59.4 minutes at a meet in Oxford. He later became the first chairman of the Sports Council and was knighted for his service in 1975.
