His stuck moment: After a string of teaching jobs at various colleges where he was considered a controversial thinker, Rice was fired from Rollins College for criticizing the policies of the president.

He rallies his resources: Rice called on former faculty from Rollins to help him start up Black Mountain College, a liberal arts school with an emphasis on the “arts.”

Unstuck result: Black Mountain became an avant-garde incubator in the 1940s and 50s, boasting an impressive roster of faculty and alumni, including John Cage, Buckminster Fuller, Arthur Penn, and Cy Twombly.

His stuck moment: Ocean wanted revenge against casino owner Terry Benedict, who Ocean believed stole his wife. His idea was to crack Benedict’s casino vault, but he couldn’t do it alone.

He rallies his resources: He assembled the criminal dream team, each with a specialty—blackjack dealing, demolitions, acrobatics, pick pocketing—that was integral to his carefully crafted plan.

Unstuck result: They all got the money ($15 million), and Ocean eventually got the girl, after a short stint in the big house.

Her stuck moment: Under contract with Columbia, Keys was prevented from releasing “Dah Dee Dah (Sexy Thing),” which she co-wrote and recorded for the film “Men in Black,” as a single. She felt her career was stalled.

She rallies her resources: Keys called on Clive Davis, her mentor and noted producer, for help. He encouraged her to change her name and helped her release a full-length album.

Unstuck result: “Songs in A Minor” sold 12 million copies, and Keys has released another four albums since.
