A lost relationship is a painful regret because it implies that there’s nothing to be done. And on occasion, there isn’t. Death, for example, can get in the way. All other reasons, however, are moot. I’ve waited too long. He won’t forgive me. I can’t forgive her. We’ve both moved on. These are the thoughts that the negative voice in our head uses to fan the fear of rejection.

Question: How do you know when it’s good enough?

We can justify just about anything, can’t we? It’s a stand-in for lack of patience or a tired imagination or a distracted agenda. It’s good enough, right? Maybe. Sometimes.

Whenever you’re ready to sign off but you have even the slightest doubt — you know, that visceral nudge that can be easily ignored — pay attention. If you can wait an hour or a day until you’re more refreshed, revisit it later. You’ll know what needs fixing, and you’ll have the energy to do it.

It can be quite satisfying working on a micro level. We’re immersed. We have our finger on the inner-mechanisms. We understand — and control — the details. That kind of familiarity makes us feel like we’re substantially part of something.

Comfort zones are critical. They let us replenish energy levels, shore up confidence, and relax. Without them, we’d probably operate in a state of manic stress or utter exhaustion. And that’s not good for anyone. But neither is shrink-wrapping yourself in safety.

Try something different every now and then to expand your world. It helps to start small (take a new route to work; attend a half-day conference) and feel your enthusiasm for the unfamiliar build.

Who doesn’t have a justification for not doing something: I’m too busy, it’s too hard, it’s not due yet, or the perennial favorite, I just don’t feel like it. But even with an excuse, is life better by putting off the inevitable? It’s hard to say yes when delays usually mean internal nagging, diminished trust, lower-quality work, and disappointment.

Often, we’re unknowingly stuck in some way that results in procrastination. Maybe we can’t see the possibilities. Or we don’t believe in the goal. Not having a plan can stop us, as can lack of resources.

Those fears are real, but they’re not reality. The truth is, if you don’t get the help you need, you might not achieve your goal as well as you’d like — or at all. You lose the chance to learn, to be generous, to build comaraderie. But you do get to own the stress, 100 percent.

For the organized among us, this question is a nonstarter. For the rest, we bet lots of reasons come to mind, like: I don’t want to stifle creativity. It will make an easy project harder. Nobody pays attention to the plan anyway. Underneath those reasons lurk the real reasons: What if my plan doesn’t work? I don’t think that way. Planning is hard.

To those real reasons we say: A plan helps you stay on track, and helps you know when you’re not. It doesn’t have to be complicated or follow someone else’s overthought format. And it should never be carved in stone.
